Third Kingdom was a world where mushrooms reigned supreme.

Located in the heart of the East Village, it offered a singular dining experience devoted entirely to fungi — a bold exploration of their beauty, depth, and culinary range. From delicate beech mushrooms to robust king trumpets and earthy maitakes, each dish was a study in transformation, texture, and time.

Helmed by Chef Juan Pajarito, also of Avant Garden, Third Kingdom transformed humble mushrooms into elegant, imaginative compositions that surprised and resonated.

A concept from Overthrow Hospitality, it brought together artistry, sustainability, and sensory wonder. The intimate space, theatrical service, and immersive menu invited guests to slow down, share, and explore. Here, mushrooms were more than an ingredient — they were the story.

Though the restaurant has closed, the work continues.

With Understory at Avant Garden, many of these dishes — and the philosophy behind them — live on, evolving in a new setting.

We invite you to join us there.
